Google Bard, AI ChatBot by Google, rival to ChatGPT, Technology

Google has launched its own AI chatbot, called Bard. The artificial intelligence chatbot can answer questions in a human-like way by accessing up-to-date information from the internet. It’s seen as a rival to ChatGPT, which launched last year.

On 6th February’2023, Sundar Pichai ( CEO of Google and Alphabet ) introduced the AI chatbot by Google, “Google Bard”.

In an introductory note Pichai stated ” AI is the most profound technology we are working on today. Whether it’s helping doctors detect diseases earlier or enabling people to access information in their own language, AI helps people, businesses and communities unlock their potential. And it opens up new opportunities that could significantly improve billions of lives. That’s why we re-oriented the company around AI six years ago — and why we see it as the most important way we can deliver on our mission: to organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful.

Since then we’ve continued to make investments in AI across the board, and Google AI and DeepMind are advancing the state of the art”.

Conversational AI service Bard is powered by Google’s Language Model for Dialogue Applications (or LaMDA for short).

Bard seeks to combine the breadth of the world’s knowledge with the power, intelligence and creativity of Google’s large language models. It draws on information from the web to provide fresh, high-quality responses. Bard can be an outlet for creativity, and a launchpad for curiosity, helping you to explain new discoveries from NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope to a 9-year-old, or learn more about the best strikers in football right now, and then get drills to build your skills.

Pichai also stated that “We’re releasing it initially with our lightweight model version of LaMDA. This much smaller model requires significantly less computing power, enabling us to scale to more users, allowing for more feedback. We’ll combine external feedback with our own internal testing to make sure Bard’s responses meet a high bar for quality, safety and groundedness in real-world information. We’re excited for this phase of testing to help us continue to learn and improve Bard’s quality and speed”.

After the massive success of Microsoft-supported ChatGTP, now Google has launched its own Artificial Intelligence (AI) chatbot Bard in select countries to compete with rival ChatGPT. Google has currently allowed early access to Bard users in the US and UK, and the company said it will expand the access over time to more countries and languages.

With BARD, Google aims to solidify its presence in the AI chatbot space while maintaining its dominance in the search engine market.

There is also a microphone button on the chat interface where you can speak your question or instruction. On the Bard page, you’ll also find options for “Reset chat” to reset the Bard chat conversion, “Bard Activity” for controlling the saved Bard chatbot activity, and a “FAQ” button that takes you to the Google Bard FAQ.

Based on several reports, it is known that Google Bard also uses natural language models and machine learning like ChatGPT, but both have different set of features. For example, ChatGPT is based on data collected up until 2021, whereas Google Bard has the potential to use up-to-date information for its responses.

Bard tells you right away that it makes mistakes. “I’m Bard, your creative and helpful collaborator. I have limitations and won’t always get it right, but your feedback will help me improve,” reads a message at the top of the page.

Main Difference between Google’s Bard & ChatGPT

The main difference between ChatGPT and Bard is the data source. Bard will continually draw information from the internet, so it will have the latest information. ChatGPT‘s sources end with 2021 data, so it is limited to newer research and information.
