Some facts about Satish Kaushik

Kaushik moved to Mumbai by 1980, and made his debut with the film Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro (1983). His first film as director was Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja (1993).

One of Satish Kaushik’s most popular roles was Calendar in Mr India, which starred Anil Kapoor and Sridevi. In an interview to Indian Express last year, he recalled how he had to look after the film’s child stars on set. He had said, “I was in charge of handling the kids. Boney (Kapoor, producer) had ample space behind the sets for their  classrooms, teachers, camping and volleyball.

Everything was there, but the fun was in collecting all the children, and I had to do that. I had to train the children for the performances, I nearly took a whip to them to collect them. Now they say, ‘Satish uncle, you were so strict.’ I used to shout at them during the shooting also.”

Kaushik had also said that Mr India didn’t need a sequel and that the film ‘shouldn’t be touched’. “Mr India belongs to Anil Kapoor, Boney Kapoor—it belongs to everyone. If it ever comes out, the legacy can only be carried on by Anil Kapoor, not anyone else. Someone else playing Mr India will not be a good thing,” he had said.

Satish Kaushik did theatre for several years before trying his luck on the silver screen. His most memorable play till date remains ‘Salesman Ramlal’.

Fame came to him in 1987 for his portrayal of cook Calendar in Bollywood film ‘Mr India’. From there, he continued to give stellar performances with movies like ‘Saajan Chale Sasural’ (1996), ‘Mr. and Mrs. Khiladi’ (1997), ‘Deewana Mastana’ (1997) among many others.

The last rites of the actor were performed at a crematorium in Mumbai. Anupam Kher, Sham Kaushal, Ranbir Kapoor, Salman Khan, Abhishek Bachchan and Ranbir Kapoor were among the Bollywood celebs visiting Kaushik’s Mumbai residence to pay their last respects to the departed actor.

His friend and colleague Anupam Kher wrote, “I know “death is the ultimate truth of this world!” But I never thought in my dreams that I would write this thing about my best friend #SatishKaushik while alive. Such a sudden full stop on a friendship of 45 years!! Life will NEVER be the same without you SATISH! Om Shanti!”

The actor had gotten this small role with the help of his classmate from NSD named Suhas Khandke who was assisting on the film.

He had shared that, he was so excited that he jumped from one platform of the station to another because he wanted to catch a fast train. People on the station started shouting, ‘marega, kya kar raha hai?’ but little did they know that Satish was so excited to start his career as an actor. He celebrated his first acting job and salary with two bottles of cold drink.
