World Environment Day is observed every year on 5th June. The objective of celebrating the World Environment day is to encourages awareness and action for the protection of the environment.
World Environment Day
World Environment Day was established in 1972 by the United Nations at the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment (5–16 June 1972), that had resulted from discussions on the integration of human interactions and the environment. It is the biggest international day for the environment. It is led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
The first World Environment Day was celebrated in the year 1973. The theme of the first celebration was “Only One Earth”. Each year this event is celebrated with a different theme. This event is supported by approx 143 countries annually in coordination with many non-governmental organizations, businesses, government entities.
World Environment Day 2023
World Environment Day 2023 is hosted by Côte d’Ivoire and supported by the Netherlands and will focus on solutions to plastic pollution under the campaign #BeatPlasticPollution.
The world is being inundated by plastic. More than 400 million tonnes of plastic is produced every year, half of which is designed to be used only once. Of that, less than 10 per cent is recycled. An estimated 19-23 million tonnes end up in lakes, rivers and seas. Today, plastic clogs our landfills, leaches into the ocean and is combusted into toxic smoke, making it one of the gravest threats to the planet.
